At Home with Drestyles

At Home with Drestyles

This week, we're visiting Dre's dreamy loft in Seattle and learning all about his takes on creating a home environment that is distinctly your own. We've already fallen in love with his impeccable taste and we're sure you will too!

Tell us about you! How did you get into interior design & TikTok?

Hello, everyone! My name is Edrian, but you can call me Dre. During my freshman year of high school, a friend of mine bestowed upon me the nickname Dre, and it has stuck with me ever since. I was also into break dancing at the time and, during a break between classes, my friends noticed my dance moves and my unique sense of style. Impressed by my ability to dance with flair and elegance, they playfully referred to me as Drestyles. The nickname instantly resonated with me, capturing both my love for expressive dancing and my distinct fashion choices. It became a symbol of my creative spirit and the way I infused style into every aspect of my life, whether it be through my dance moves, fashion sense, or, eventually, my interior design endeavors.

Over time, the nickname became more than just a casual moniker among friends. It became a part of my identity, a name that people associated with my artistic expression and unique approach to creativity. As I pursued my passion for interior design on platforms like TikTok, my nickname seamlessly transitioned into my social media handles, including Drestyles. As I continue to explore the realms of interior design and share my passion on TikTok, I embrace my nickname as a symbol of my artistic identity and a connection to the friendships and experiences that have shaped me along the way.

Tell us about your creative process. Where do you find inspiration?

In 2016, a significant milestone occurred in my life that ignited my passion for interior design even further - I purchased my first home. As a new homeowner, I was filled with excitement and a desire to create a space that truly reflected my personality and style. I embarked on a journey of exploration and self-discovery through interior design, pouring countless hours into researching design concepts, browsing through magazines and online platforms, and visiting furniture stores to gather inspiration and ideas. I discovered that interior design was not just about aesthetics, but also about creating functional and harmonious living spaces.

I have since sold that home and now live in my dream loft. By showcasing my own space on TikTok, I aim to inspire others to explore their own creativity, step outside their comfort zones, and create spaces that truly reflect who they are. The positive feedback and encouragement I receive from the TikTok community fuels my passion for interior design! From buying my fist home and now living in my dream space, it has allowed me to combine my artistic inclinations, my love for design, and my desire to inspire others, all while building a supportive community along the way. I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue my passion, and I look forward to continuing my exploration of interior design on TikTok, sharing my experiences, and connecting with fellow design enthusiasts.

What’s one piece of advice you always go back to when it comes to your career?

When it comes to finding inspiration for my interior design projects, I look to a variety of places for ideas. Instagram is an incredible platform for discovering talented designers, architects, and creatives from around the world. I follow accounts that showcase a diverse range of interior styles, from minimalistic and modern to eclectic and bohemian. In addition to Instagram, I also find inspiration in foreign magazines like Popeye. I enjoy immersing myself in the pages, exploring the intersection of fashion, lifestyle, and interior design. The imagery and editorial content often introduce me to unconventional pairings and cultural influences that I can then incorporate into my own designs!

Mixing and matching styles is a key aspect of my creative process. By embracing an eclectic approach, I can create unique and visually stunning compositions that speak to my individual style. Traveling also plays a significant role in my creative process! Exploring different countries and immersing myself in diverse cultures exposes me to new architectural styles, local craftsmanship, and design traditions. It definitely broadens my design perspective and encourages me to think outside the box.

What’s one piece of advice you always go back to when it comes to your career?

Actually, I love this quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald - For what it’s worth... it’s never too late, or in my case too early, to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit. Start whenever you want. You can change or stay the same. There are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you’ve never felt before. I hope you meet people who have a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start over again.

I started my career in the medical field, but deep down I knew that my true passion lay in UI/UX design. Despite the initial hesitation and the fear of starting over, I realized that it was never too late to make a change and pursue a career that aligned with my passion. It's brought me immense fulfillment and allowed me to express my creativity and make a meaningful impact through my work. It has led me to meet incredible individuals from diverse backgrounds, exposed me to new perspectives, and enabled me to continuously learn and grow. I hope this quote resonates with others who may be contemplating a career change or pursuing their passions - it's never too late to follow your dreams!

What makes a space feel like home?

For me it's all about expressing your personality and creating an environment where you can truly be yourself. It's your sanctuary and what matters most is how it makes you feel! Whether it's bold colors, unconventional furniture arrangements, or displaying cherished mementos, it's all about infusing your personal touch into every corner. Having a space that feels like home means embracing the things that bring you joy and comfort. It's about surrounding yourself with objects, artwork, and decor that resonate with your soul. Maybe it's a collection of books that transports you to different worlds, or artwork that evokes emotions and inspires you. It could be incorporating elements from your heritage or travels, integrating pieces that hold sentimental value.

While it's natural to consider the opinions of loved ones and seek their input, ultimately, what matters most is how your space resonates with you!

As a creative, what’s your best tip for achieving a sense of balance in your home?

Carefully consider the blend of form and function when selecting pieces for your space. Finding the right balance between aesthetics and practicality is key to creating a harmonious and functional environment. Ask yourself questions like: Will this piece provide the necessary storage? Does it offer comfort and support? Does it align with the activities you enjoy in that space?

While aesthetics play a significant role in creating an inviting atmosphere, functionality ensures that your space serves its purpose effectively. Don't be afraid to sit and live with each piece before making a final decision. Take the time to experience the comfort, usability, and overall feel of the items you are considering.

Remember, achieving balance in your home is not about adhering to strict rules or following trends - it's about curating a space that reflects your personality and lifestyle. Each piece you choose should have a purpose and a story, adding layers of meaning to your home.

What are some of your home essentials?

I love my collection of knick-knacks! It includes artwork, photographs, souvenirs from travels, and  items that hold sentimental value. These little details add character and make my space feel uniquely mine.

Another essential for me is soft ambient lighting. I prefer warm lighting options like table lamps, string lights, and candles. I find it perfect for unwinding after a long day - it creates a calming environment for activities like reading or listening to music.

Speaking of music, quality speakers are a must-have for me. Having a good sound system allows me to fully immerse myself in my favorite tunes. A comfy couch is an essential, too. It's not just a seating option; it's a place where I can relax, unwind, and even catch a few extra Z's if I feel like it :)

What are you looking forward to in 2023?

2023 holds great promise and anticipation for me as I start my career as a UI/UX designer. I'm focusing on building connections within Seattle and growing my online presence. I am thrilled to embark on new projects and collaborate with talented individuals, including brands. Through platforms like TikTok and other social media channels, I aspire to showcase my unique perspective as Drestyles.
